SimplySilk® membrane

A bioresorbable barrier membrane entirely free of animal tissue

What is SimplySilk® membrane?

SimplySilk® membrane is a resorbable barrier membrane intended to facilitate bone regrowth in dental implant, periodontal procedures and cranio-maxillo-facial surgery. Unlike conventional GBR membranes derived from animal collagen, SimplySilk® is entirely free of animal tissue and is produced by isolating and purifying the silk protein fibroin from the cocoons of the silkworm Bombyx mori. This eliminates the risk of pathogen transmission and supports extended degradation profiles. The biocompatible silk material promotes safe and reliable bone defect healing, while its natural resorption eliminates the need for a second surgical procedure for removal.

Developed with our proprietary PureSilk® (silk fibroin) technology, the membrane features a unique multi-layer design: a porous, fleece-like outer layer promotes rapid soft tissue integration, while an optional compact silk fibroin film core slows biodegradation and enhances mechanical stability – ensuring prolonged barrier function when clinically needed. Additionally, a reinforced variant with a biodegradable magnesium reinforcing structure is available – the first fully resorbable form-stable GBR membrane on the market. This innovative combination provides reliable structural support during healing while allowing for complete resorption, eliminating the need for a second intervention. Depending on the indication, our products are the alternative to PDS films (orbital reconstruction) or conventional collagen membranes (GBR).

Indications

The membrane is indicated for use in the following procedures:

  • Augmentation around implants placed in immediate and delayed extraction sockets in intra-oral surgery,
  • Localized or alveolar ridge augmentation for later implantation or prosthetic treatment in intra-oral surgery,
  • Guided bone regeneration (GBR) of dehiscence defects in intra-oral surgery,
  • Guided tissue regeneration (GTR) procedures of periodontal defects in intra-oral surgery,
  • Augmentation or separation of implants in cranio-maxillo-facial surgery,
  • Augmentation or repair of facial bones including the orbital walls in cranio-maxillo-facial surgery.

Application Guideline

1. Preparation

Trim and shape the membrane to the correct size using standard clinical trimming tools in a dry state.

2. Application

SimplySilk® membrane may be applied in either a dry or hydrated state. If the membrane is kept dry, its structure remains more stable, especially for those with magnesium reinforcement.

Hydration facilitates adaption to the augmentation. While hydrating the membrane (e. g. physiological saline solution) it changes its colour and transparency (max. 2 min).

3. Placement

For optimal tissue integration and regeneration, the membrane must be placed in complete contact with the tissue defect and ensure maximum contact with healthy, well-vascularized tissue. It is recommended to place the smooth side towards the bone.

4. Fixation

Fixation is not required. If fixation is desired, use pins or sutures. Do not use screws for fixation.
